John Snell - Managing Director

John Snell began his career in 1978 at Merrill Lynch where he developed an expertise at assisting corporations in devising and executing hedge strategies to meet expected market and budget targets utilizing an array of financial tools. In 1988, John established Risk Management Incorporated to facilitate and develop corporate hedge programs in energy markets. As the founder and Managing Director of RMI John has been involved with every aspect of RMI’s growth for the past 22 years. RMI has become an industry leader in energy price risk management consulting and execution.


  • Spearheads consulting projects involving risk management program objective definition, budget setting, hedge strategy design, trade recommendations, program implementation, execution, and the application of software/systems for proper hedge reconciliation.
  • Has 32 years of experience developing and implementing risk management strategies. Before founding RMI, devised and executed risk management strategies for major corporations while employed at Merrill Lynch.
  • At the request of investor-owned utility clients, John has testified on risk management issues before state commissions in Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Ontario.
  • John has provided staff presentations to State Commissions on behalf of investor-owned utility clients in Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
  • On behalf of municipal utility clients, John has presented energy risk management to city councils/committees in Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, and Indiana.
  • Provided energy risk management educational seminars for a multitude of associations, including American Gas Association, American Power Conference, American Public Gas Association, Association of Energy Engineers, California Municipal Utility Association, Edison Electric Institute, Electric Power Research Institute, Food Marketers Institute, Futures Industry Association, Gas Technology Institute, Georgia Municipal Association, National Brick Association, National Coal Transportation Association, Northwest Public Power Association, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, Southern Gas Association, Tennessee Gas Association, and United States Energy Association.
